As per my above comment, running those commands did fix the issue. Note:
as I mentioned, you need to install the depends also.. example:
~# sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg unity-control-center xserver-xorg-
video-intel xserver-xorg-core xorg-video-abi-15 libcheese-gtk23

I get the -51 kernel now in trusty, and it boots with wifi as well, but
USB keyboard/mouse does not work (though it is detected)

I was able to resolve this on trusty doing the following:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-intel (and all the
depends)
then reboot.
Just FYI, i'm on -30 kernel, and using ubuntu-mate as as desktop.
