Tried the 1/16 jaunty live cd. After a minute or two of the Ubuntu
loading image, I get a screen of pixel-thin vertical stripes of various
colors--like a pastel plaid but only vertical. And it freezes on that
screen and won't progress--no disk activity, nothing.

Oh, and 7.10 ran fine on the same machine.

Just tried the 10/15 live CD release of 8.10. Freezes as the desktop is
being loaded. I get a white background, a ubuntu "busy"-style mouse
pointer and nothing, just frozen, no disk activity, no movement of
pointer.
Should I file that as a separate bug?

Yes it's still a problem even after updates, and just recently a
reinstallation.

Regardless of what windows manager I use (xfce4 or gnome), ever minute
or so, the desktop will exhibit a number of errors simultaneously:
