Vincenzo,
I understand your disappointment but I don't think the developers are
waiting for people to forget. This issue has been fixed upstream with a
trivial patch wich adds a gconf option, so the developers did do
something about this problem (even if it took a long battle for
this...).

Would it be possible to add this patch to the rhythmbox package shipped
with ubuntu? This bug is more than 2 years old and there is a trivial
fix...

The patch solves the problem for me. It can be simply installed without
the need to recompile anything since the plugin is in Python.

To clear a bit my previous posts: totem-xine solves the fact that the
thumbnailer fails and is slow but does not solve the fact that when the
thumbnailer runs the properties window does not appear.

About the thumbnailer problem, a workaround is to install totem-xine. I
am not sure if I should open a separated bug for this.

Here (hardy 64bit) the problem seems related to the thumbnailer. When
it's running on .mkv files (and slowly trying to create the thumbnail,
failing) I get the same dialog about the window construction. After the
thumbnailer is done for the directory, the properties work again.

I used another workaround. I put the following line in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
This way after the resume I get the sound back without having to restart alsa.

Probably you have to adapt it to your sound card model with the alsa
