This bug still exists in linux-image-2.6.32-22.33. The laptop will,
however, boot successfully on the 2.6.33-020633-generic kernel from
ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/.
I'll attach the results of apport-collect shortly, while the laptop's
booted on the .33 kernel.

This is still a problem as of 0.2.3dbs-65ubuntu. Debian's version
apparently still has the same problem, while the inability to load any
font wider than 8 pixels has been long-since fixed in kbd.
