This is scary because grub is used to boot Windows 7 as well.
Update-manager window locks up and turns gray. It is completely
unresponsive, but the system is otherwise working -- unless this update
trashed grub's ability to boot the system.

I did not allow the installer to change grub's menu.lst file and this
error was the result. Changing menu.lst is pure hell in Ubuntu, and I
will not use any form of Linux unless I can make Windows 7 is the
default boot option. Editing menu.lst to make that happen is idiot
