I was also wondering about using inotify on the actual sysfs file. Is it
possible for inotify to tell you which process is causing a
write to a file?

I disabled the screensaver and that did the trick! In retrospect it makes
sense because the screen seemed to dim immediately upon certain X events like
clicking the mouse that would be the types of things a screensaver would be
checking for to reset its internal timer.

This is an install on a 64 bit system using nspluginwrapper. The
included IA32 libraries need to be expanded to include (at least)
libxcb-render-util.so.0 and 32 bit versions of anything else that comes
from running ldd on the flash
