The network manager interface has changed so much since Dapper, I
don't have any idea if this is still a problem. Now all I do is share
folders with Samba and printers with CUPS (except that isn't working
right...another story). Instead of the network manager I use folder
sharing options

Upon reflection I think I am running two logins--the Human screen and
the gray one. Both from the default install. They must not communicate
100% effectively what each other is doing.
