Oops, forgot one key point in above post. I am not suspending the laptop
or closing the lid. It has never happened while I am actively working on
the computer.

I have the same/similar problem. The mouse pointer disappears
ocassionally. I have not yet identified the cause. Xubuntu 14.04, Kernel
3.17, no light-locker.
