Any update on this? I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspiron, and it
doesn't detect my alps touchpad at all.

I just uninstalled Xubuntu, formatted my hard drive, and installed
Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). Unfortunately, my touchpad still does not
work. It used to work with Windows, but has ceased working since I
switched over to Linux. Do I still need to try a mainline kernel even
though I updated Ubunt
If it is a kernel issue, what should I do to fix it? I'm new to
linux/ubuntu/xubuntu, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
