and tested it yesterday. fftest works with it, but ffcfstress does not,
which I have yet to debug.

That took a while to fix! After first having to run fsck because /
wouldn't mount because of a few dozen lost inodes..
Anyways, clearly the cache got it all fixed (as usual).
What manner of debugging would be needed to discover why the entire
computer is crashing when I run 'Update Manager'?

I got this one CD disc with a manufacturing defect on track 9 of 15.
The extraction disc writing stops at track 9. The CD is stuck and can't
get past the errors. rhythmbox doesn't time-out. It's stuck, too.
