Turns out this was due (AFAIK) to a SHMMAX limit causing the install to
fail. I guess the system (and I!) were too quick to report a bug. I
bumped up SHMMAX and the install happened correctly.

May I suggest booting a CD/DVD/USB with Ubuntu 12.04 and see if the
ralink wifi radio works? For clarity I list below the output from 'lsusb
-v' as there may be differences between our devices.
