I made fresh installation of Xubuntu on virtual machine. After enabling
of proposed updates and updating the system the gvfs-backends came as a
dependency. So I can confirm that now everything works as expected.

I think It should be fixed in Oneiric as well because in corporate
environment it is very common that people needs to connect to remote
shares, e.g. Windows. Although workaround is very simple.

I can confirm that bug is still here on the latest 2.6.32-18 kernel. I
don't have any laptop lid issues because I use desktop PC, but it

I haven't tested it since Scott's advice worked for my Xubuntu 9.04. But
