I'm having the same problem (I think) with my Dell CPS laptop that has a GeForce Go 7950 GTX.
I get a weird techno-plaid pattern that obscures everything. Even the F1, F2 and so on terminals are screwed. I've found that using vbetool to turn off monitor power and then back on again gets me back in, but it;s hardly great. Using compiz seems to make it happen more frequently, but it happens even without it.
