Same for me, happens sporadically, no rhyme or reason. I don't think it's specific to Ubuntu however, and is a bug in Thunderbird itself. Have had the same thing happen to me periodically on Linux distros I built based on Puppy Linux. My add-ons are: Lightning Lookout Provider for Google Calendars

The bug was fixed (I think some time ago) in the 3.5 branch of kubuntu. The Gentoo version never exhibited the bug so I figure it was just the specific package I was having a problem with. I assume all is well in the KDE 4 series but I'm not using that branch yet so I don't know. - Original

I found the problem, it was the setting to raise kicker when it touches the bottom of my screen. Turn that off and kicker autohides as expected. Not sure what happened to make kicker stop working in the first place though. I hadn't changed any settings in the panel menu from when it was working
