My system is an upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 (from 09.04).

I found a solution that worked on my system Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty with gtk-2.0,
python2.6 and libvte9:
I simply deleted the libvte.so files on my system ad did a
reinstallation of the package libvte9!
Now both, gdebi-gtk and gome-terminal as two affected applications, work

i would like to test manually compiling the kernel 2.6.24.5 for my ibook
g4 since i got the same errors as reported.
(1) could someone please post the additional steps for getting the
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y option compiled in the kernel and not loaded as a module?
