Thanks for your helpful replies.
Am I correct in understanding, the Thunderbird snap does not allow

Kernel 5.6.19: OK
If I'm not mistaken, this was the last version before 5.7, so the bug
must have been introduced in 5.7.0.

[amdgpu] kernel crash when resuming
Nevermind, I was running 5.8, not 5.0.0. I forgot to select 5.0.0 in the
boot menu.

Title:
[amdgpu] kernel crash when resuming from automatic
I was able to reproduce this with kernel 5.0.0 too. Isn't it possible
that this is not caused by the kernel? I don't think I had this issue
back then - it's something more recent.
** Attachment added: "Logs from a previous session that crashed with kernel
5.0.0"
I'm attaching the requested logs.
Near the end of this file you'll see the last action I performed, which
was the CTRL+ALT+PRINT+REISUB combination to reboot. You'll also see
that there is a long crash log related to AMDGPU.
Oh, and this time when it crashed I attempted to switch TTY, and then
I can't see any files in /var/crash/, even after applying the workaround
and reproducing the freeze again.
This time the freeze was more severe. There was no response from the
keyboard and a hard reset was the only way to recover.

When the system resumes from automatic suspension,
Nim's status change of no longer affects ppp I think was just a mistake
and rectified, but the rectification wasn't recorded in a new message.
This bug report no longer affects ppp >= 2.4.9, as it was fixed upstream
and is the reason the corresponding Debian bug was closed.
This SRU patch
Can report today the same issue - this happened on my Asrock x300
running popos 20.04 LTS

USB controllers disconnects after random time
Turns out, this is due to the programmer's assumption that fcb->name[8]
and fcb->ext[3] can be accessed contiguously by fcb->name[0..10]. So,
the code is actually "lazy", if not bad. Obviously, this has worked in C
for a long time but no longer can be depended on.
** Changed in: gcc-9 (Ubuntu)
I've discovered that "-Og" does produce working, somewhat-optimized,
code. Still, I need to understand why this code was appearing to the
optimizer as a no-op. I need to make sure that no other code is being
incorrectly optimized. As it stands, this looks to me to be erroneous
optimization by GCC.
Here's the latest code example, eliminating the need for the cpmutl.h
header file

I see that gcc-7 also has the same issue. I'm starting to wonder if this
code is flawed, but I don't see the problem. I would have thought "-O3"
is pretty safe and sane. I could imagine -O5 doing something like this.

Bugs,
On a hunch, I added "volatile" to the declarations of the function
parameters:
int match_fcb(volatile struct cpmfcb *mask, volatile struct cpmfcb *fcb)
This caused code to be generated, and it looks viable. It's still
unclear to me why this code was being optimized away.
