I'd like to report that I also have this issue. Running Ubuntu 11.10 x86
with Gnome 3 on an nVidia 9600M GT, when I use the "Share Full Screen"
option in Skype all GUI's disappear from my screen. The only way for me
to recover is to either track down the exact location of the "Stop
Screen Sharing"
Plaintext passthrough has been broken by design for a very long time,
and practically impossible to support.
I'm in favor of deprecating the current implementation and hopefully
replacing it with a better approach eventually.

So I tried to reproduce this as follows, but it seems to be working as
desired...
1) rm -f ~/.byobu/keybindings.tmux
2) F5 refresh profile
3) press ctrl-a
4) byobu-ctrl-a script runs, prompting for selecting 1 or 2
5) select 1
6) press "ctrl-a c" and it creates a new window
Then I do this:
1) rm
One followup... The fact that byobu-ctrl-a ran was introduced by byobu
5.9 -- previously, byobu-ctrl-a was not supported by tmux.

In this case, Debian's byobu package is downstream from Ubuntu, as I'm
both the upstream byobu maintainer and the Ubuntu byobu package
maintainer.

Okay, looks like the least common denominator is working best, in my
testing, setting TERM=screen works in all of my test scenarios.
TERM=screen
* Working: vim/tmux, vim/screen, mutt/tmux, mutt/screen, 256color2.pl
* Broken: none
TERM=screen-256color
* Working: vim/screen, mutt/screen, mutt/tm
Note that the tmux FAQ explicitly recommends against setting TERM to anything
other than screen or screen-256color:

byobu (screen) goes nuts when running
Hmm, okay, I did reproduce this once, but I'm not able to reproduce it
now. Here's what I've tried...
1) backend == tmux, running byobu inside of byobu:
kirkland@x220:~$ byobu
sessions should be nested with care. unset $TMUX to force.
2) backend == tmux, running byobu-tmux inside of byobu:

Hmm, that doesn't solve the problem though...
Try:
$ TERM=screen-256color-bce vim debian/changelog
(or any other file that vim sets the background color)

Okay, so it seems that vim needs TERM=screen-bce and not TERM=screen-
256color for the background color to work.
I'll switch byobu to export TERM=screen-bce for now, but I don't yet
know what implications there might be. If regressions happen, I'll have
to roll this back.
