Binary package hint: cups
I'm printing to a Brother 5250 hard wired to my computer. Sometimes the
job will print right away. Other times, it'll print a page of gibberish
of the sort like this:

printer hangs on jobs.

When I try to open sound through system --> preference --> sound, it
provides an error "waiting for sound system to respond". System sound
works as evidenced by beep upon system startup but no other sound is
possible. Sound is not muted in any program. Everything else works
