I've encountered this on 9.04 as well as on 9.10 when I recently switched
(clean install, with few config directories moved, but not nautilus) in my
video folders. I'm using 64bit version of ubuntu.
it looks like there's some problem with creating miniature, except nautilus
doesn't replace file
I've just upgraded to 9.10 RC (fresh install actually), and brightness
problem still persists. Since hal is supposed to be depreciated, I'm not
sure if it still has anything to do with brightness.
Well.. I think I'll stick to smartdimmer -s for a while, since I
don't want to accidentally tweak

I got this problem with variety of apps accross ubuntu.
I'm neither using emacs, nor have noticed the problem within gnome-terminal,
but it often occurs within mine game, where I often have to move window around
to see marked flags, within OpenOffice where certain graphical elements tend to
well... that doesn't work for me though.
You've added that parameter at the end of the kernel line in menu.lst, right?

I guess that's becouse open source drivers are installed and beeing used
from the beginning, when for nvidia I have onlu closed source drivers
that need to be installed through jockey. Anyway, since the problem is
with both drivers, intel as well as nvidia, and probably not with the
default
Tell me one thing. Do you have compiz enabled by default? maybe it's the
case with Intel drivers as well? I know that these are turned on by
default on my other, older laptop with intel graphic

I tried hibernation without nvidia driver today. God thing id didn't
blocked my wireless again. Bad, it didn't even started X. It stuck at
usplash and then just turned off notebook completely.

Jaunty jackalope can operate backlight as long as user doesn't install
nvidia drivers. I noticed that when I launched live cd and installed it

I have similar problem on similar notebook (Samsung R510 with nvidia 9200GS
graphic card.
I'm using 64bit version of Ubuntu with nvidia 180.44 drivers.
Wireless chipset is atheros ar242x (or ar5007 according to windows) with ath5
drivers I believe.
The only difference is that for me it reboots

I'm not on Centrino 2, however same model and Graphic card, and adjusting
brightness doesn't work for me too (as well as several other Fn combinations).
Also, screen's nod dimming automaticly when I'm working only on battery, which
result in only 2 hours of work compared to about 3,5 under
