I think it was my firefox 3.5.3 German. I got the error report and a
moment later a dialog which told me my firefox was unexpected closed,
but firefox is still running. After writing this report I'll go on with
the firefox error report dialog.

I expect that
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
generate a new clean xorg.conf for video drivers. But there is not a new
xorg.conf. I think it is the consequence by the change to devicekit + udev
instead xorg.conf + hal.
The radeon driver works without any xorg.conf
I have the same issue with installed radeonhd and fglrx. Only removing
fglrx fix it. Of cource I need another or new xorg.conf, because
radeonhd is not able to work with a xorg.conf which is reconfigured by
aticonfig. The wrong xorg.conf lead to some colored blocks on the top of
my display.

I've tested the new 8.623 (Catalyst 9.7) on my HD 3870 (R670) from Karmic
(2.6.31-5-24), started with a new xorg.conf, aticonfig --initial and have the
same issue: black screen.
On the old kernel 2.6.28-14 the new 8.623 works, but without 2D support
