I did some more research and it's not a configuration issue. Here's
what's happening.
Example:
I have a channel that XML TV says is on 800. When it comes time to record the
show, mythbackend tries to resolve channel 800 to a frequency. When it can't,
it simply does not record the show.

If you download xserver-xorg-video-tdfx_1.2.1-5_i386.deb from Debian
Unstable and replace /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/tdfx_drv.so with the
one contained in this package, then tdfx will work correctly except with
no OpenGL. I'm not suggesting that this is the fix, but it does show

freezes and GDM restarts on a new vt. If I switch to using vesa, I can

I'm using a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI (16 Meg). It will load Gnome until the
desktop image shows up. Then it restarts GDM. For KDE, it will run
