Thank you Martin for the tip on devkit-disk --inhibit, and thank you Jan
for bringing this to my attention.
Support for devicekit-disks has been added to the upstream gparted
repository for inclusion in the next release of GParted.

Thanks for the extra information regarding running the command on a non-
fragmented file system.
Your testing confirms that it is beneficial to have the file systems
defragmented before using GParted to manipulate the partitions.

The source of this problem is that GParted uses the "dosfsck -a -v"
command to determine the number of used sectors in a FAT16/32 file

smallest value to which a FAT16/32 file system can be shrunk.

For example, the ntfsprogs package provides the commands necessary to

My assumption is that this request concerns the contents of the
"Mountpoint" and "Label" columns in the GParted display.
GParted will display the "Mountpoint" column if, and only if at least one
partition on the device is currently mounted.
The "Label" column will be displayed if, and only if at
My guess is that this problem is related to a spelling mistake in the
lock name taken to prevent auto-mounting of partitions. If so then this
bug was solved in GParted 0.4.3.

My bad. I had a mistake in the spelling of the lock name used by hal-
lock.
In gparted.in file the lock taken by hal-lock is wrong. The lock taken is
"org.freedeskdesktop.Hal.Device.Storage" while it should be
"org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Storage".
