Problem now fixed for me by doing
sudo apt-get remove cups
sudo rm /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove
reboot server
sudo apt-get install cups
this fix worked, but not at all pretty, this problem occurred on a brand
new CD ROM install ...

I had the dark screen issue with 2.6.27.13 on a Dell Inspiron 1520 + Nvidia
8600M GT card.
The system would only run with .12
The install of nvidia-glx-180 has solved the problem.

I have the same problem on 8.10 + Gnome, could not start Quanta after
entering MDI Childframe mode (pity)
cured also by quanta --resetlayout from the command line.
but on this first (re)run, I could not resize the Quanta window (which
had opened in and had locked to the size of the parent winow

If I select Shut down... from the System menu, the computer will shutdown
then reboot. However if I do sudo shutdown -h now in a terminal it shuts down
properly. This has been repeated many times. Because it is able to shutdown
from the terminal I know it is not a BIOS
