II can confirm this on a HPNX6110 with i915GM and 512MB Ram. Desktop-
effects enabled by default on the live-cd (latest tested 2007-09-10)
causes a nearly unusable desktop. Installed system is slower than it
should, too (and not yet tested, but I suggest there will be effects on
battery-usage) .
Could you please check which openoffice.org-style* packages are
installed? If you try to use an icon-style that is actually not
installed something like this may happen. You should be able to get the
icons back by either installing the appropriate package or by selecting
an installed style.

I have to agree with Sebastien. There is a possibility to get it to work
(renaming/deleting libecalbackendcontacts.so), with the problem, that it
breaks the birthday-notification feature of evolution, which, if this
was a default behavior of the Ubuntu-Package, would cause another bug-
if it was this computer. In which case I had a
probably no standard sources.list to start with.
So I reduced /etc/apt/sources.list to a minimum, and now the upgrade is running.
Maybe the upgrade process should include an organisation step before actually
updating the sources?

you try to fetch the newer firmware with an up-to-date bcm43xx-fw-

It seems this issue is related to network-manager, not to evolution
itself (see latest comment on above mentioned bugzilla report). There
is a patch for this under
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=84286action=view , which
does not 1:1 fit for ubuntu sources. I have adopted it (see
Network-Manager issue, not Evolution one.

Is this only bonobo-activation-server or (like on my machine) evolution-
data-server-1.10, too? There are 2 processes running after log out from
a gnome-session, e-d-s and bonobo-activation-server. The latter gets
closed when killing evolution-data-server-1.10 (see LP #90258).
