with the laptop on a dock and a separate external monitor. No dual-head,
just the external monitor. My secondary setup is with the laptop alone.

I use the default 2x2 workspaces, having setup through CCSM (Place
Windows / Fixed Window Placement / Windows with fixed viewport) some
application windows to always open in specific workspaces. The
application windows indeed open in the respective workspaces with no
problem.
Just wanted to add that in my case the installer crashed right after the
first "Next" button (language). I was trying to install Linux Mint 10
KDE inside a VirtualBox VM with 1GB memory. It is probably the point
when the installer enters the Disk Partitioning section.

was functioning correctly, but at a very low level / volume.
