I also have a Toshiba Satellite M305D and am experiencing the exact same problem with 64 bit Intrepid. If any progress has been made on this front I would love to know.
Interestingly, I had the same result after going into hibernate and returning, but for some reason I have two identical battery icons on my top panel after the return.
