I have also this regression. I have an ATI Mobility X700 on my acer Aspire
5024WLMi.
Since Xorg 7.3, X700 works quite nice with the opensource radeon driver.

Recently, i tried alpha 3 liveCD of Hardy.
And, wow. i surprised about it.
Now, my ATI X700 is supported in normal mode but also DRI, RandR and compiz
effects are enabled by default without blobs! :-D
Moreover, i heard that EXA Render Accel on R300/400 are now added in "radeon"
