I just updated to the openssh-server_5.3p1-3ubuntu5 package for a Lucid instance, and now I can't get SSH to start. Or, rather, I'm running into what Jan mentioned above, with the respawning/terminating loop that eventually results in init deciding that SSH isn't going to start, and giving up. So

I'm seeing the same thing on Jaunty now, as of my more recent update from package repositories on 09/27/2009. Affecting all instances I'm running in EC2. 17:50:04 up 1 day, 17:02, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 -- [karmic] loadavg is 0.00 0.00 0.00 all time https://bugs.launchpad.net/
