Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS it happens if i disable Desktop Item like so: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false i have an updated system, my specs are Acer 4830tg laptop with discrete Nvidia Optimus technology, but the bug happens when i'm using integrated graphics as well.

here's an attachment of screenshot, step by step, using chromium as example: 1) start application in maximized mode. 2) move window to a grid on the left side of the screen using ++left 3) drag window away using cursor from gridded postion, window collapses instead of retaining pre-gridded size.
