Great to hear you got a patch ready. But I am also experiencing same issue with
VLC 2.1.2 on pretty much clean install of xubuntu 14.04, so maybe the problem
is not only in Parole?

In my case this crash was caused by having vim undo files
(.something.list.~un) in /etc/apt/sources.list.d, which are binary.
Looks like far too many files are being read in process
