Deleting the synaptics driver resolves the issue.
It appears the driver needs to be deleted with the introduction of the libinput
driver (now that the synaptics driver has been deprecated).
However this issue/bug occurred as the synaptic driver was not deleted

Very much appreciate your taking the time to follow up on this. After
quite some struggles and hesitation I've gone ahead to re-install
Firefox.
Having done so, I'm am now no longer able to observe or reproduce the

I can confirm this issue also occurred on a system that was upgraded
from 16.04.
(a) Out of curiousity, are you actually able to enable/disable your
touchpad on your laptop with Gnome on 18.04 using the key combinations
(Hotkey) specific to your laptop?

for 12.04. No problems installing 12.04 on non-pae systems - however I
believe it is the last currently supported platform that works on

To-date, cannot utilise Modem Manager GUI in 12.04 LTS, as it is understood
that there is a 'bug' in Modem Manager version 0.5.2 that installed in Ubuntu
12.04 by default. On modem initialization it sets text mode instead of PDU mode
for SMS, but newer modems can't work in
