I do not use any firewalls. This is hardy 8.04. A scan not as the root
user (not using sudo) works perfectly.

I have been asked to reboot after every single update in the past month
on ubuntu hardy nearly. I find this UNACCEPTABLE and typical of windows
and microsoft behavior ( except they only update on tuesdays). How can
you justify a reboot after i just updated today. MY average

/forcefsck before you issue your shutdown.
