Sounds like you have the same problem as me. (Asus UX501JW)
I was given a workaround from linux-input. It enables brightness keys
and airplane key.

Please note: All fn keys are working in Ubuntu except the brightness
keys + flightmode key, and they do what they are supposed to do.
Keys that work: (Also behave correctly!)

Thank you for the suggestion.
I have now updated the BIOS to the latest version 205.
Ubuntu no longer boots. It gets stuck on the ubuntu boot screen. With
the ubuntu logo and the small dots below it.
I am still able to boot Mint and the problem is not fixed in Mint.

I tried all the workarounds listed an here are my results:
Booting with defaults:
- Brightness hotkeys does not work.
- Brightness slider in Power Management works.

That's right. I used all the defaults while testing the 4.1-rc5
kernel. Without Nvidia proprietary driver.

Thanks for the reply. I have unfortunately gotten rid of Ubuntu to try
Linux Mint that has the same problem.
Mint being based on Ubuntu, would the logs from Mint be any helpful?
Otherwise I'm afraid I cannot supply any logs.
