I would suggest that you just uninstall wlanassistant and use knetwork manager 
instead.  With a few simple file edits, you can have it up and running in 
minutes.  It supports WPA1 and WPA2.  It also puts an icon in the system tray 
for easy use.  Follow this link for instructions.  All you have to do is change 
the "gedit" command to "kwrite".  It works like a charm.  note: you must have 
wpa_supplicant installed for wpa support!
