I logged out and back in and the problem went away. It think I may have
caused it when I saw a directory in my home identified as owned by root
and I changed the ownership to me. I've not seen the problem again.

upgraded from 8.04. I tried a vanilla 8.10 system and it works as the

On 8.10 on my main machine I also get "hci_cmd_task: hci0 command tx
timeout" and Bluetooth worked fine in 8.04 and 7.10 on this machine. It
works fine though, in 8.10 on two of my laptops both different
manufacturers.

Confirmed, I see the same thing on a T61P. See
