"Wayland" doesn't appear to care how many bugs they have created with
their philosophical decision to not allow actions like "sudo synaptic"
starting a graphical application from the command line. Is there any
rationale??

With Nemo browsing the network just fine to Windows 10 was able to get
printer installed. Not a BIOS problem.

Not fixed in 14.04.4 LTS. 14.04 originally did not have this garbled
problem, but a fresh install of 14.04 does.
Should I enter a new bug against 14.04 LTS since this Xenial bug is
fixed? 14.04 is supposed to be supported until 2019 I think.

I had selected partition /dev/sdb2 which is 10 GB. Install showed me

I run standard Ubuntu and am not familiar with MATE. A couple years ago
I may have tried it briefly in another Linux distro. I forget. Months
ago I tried Lubuntu which as I remember didn't have the hashing
problem. I think it uses LXDE. There's Kubuntu, Gnome, ... however many
variations of
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri

re-does the wallpaper and can clean up the hashing.

Wily 15.10 is much better than 15.04. About half the time Wily comes up
O.K., if not maybe one set wallpape fixes it.
There've been Wily xserver updates to xserver - one of the xserver
updates made hashing wallpaper worse, next update now much better than
15.04.
Of course 14.10 and preceding
Bios update is in 1404247 - if it screws up I've got a dead computer.
1410 and before run just fine.
November and before 1504 ran fine. Win7 just fine. (Well, pretty slow
it's Microsoft)

Wily Werewolf here, updated as of 14 may, boots normally, no Hashing.
Reboot to 15.04, screen Hashed as usual.
Reboot to Wily Werewolf, boots normally again, no Hashing.

Still very much there on boot of vivid and wily.
Do note, nautilus pictures select wallpaper once or twice or three
times wallpaper displays correctly as it does on 14.10, 14.04, etc.
I made a command line version which works sometimes:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-url
I looked at the Lenovo support site.
The BIOS upgrade is for Win7 64 so I'll have to boot that ( if Ubuntu Grub
hasn't screwed up the Win 7 bootloader ) and see if the download and exe will
work.
Of course if a BIOS update fails I've got a dead computer.

Fixed for me here, I'm the originator of the bug report.
I still have another wallpaper bug #1404247 on every boot the wallpaper
is hashed horizontally. Files Pictures select a jpg set as
wallpaper fixes the wallpaper until the next boot.

Yesterday installed Nov 11 Vivid .iso in another partition. Wallpaper
works fine. As of mid December to present, every boot wallpaper screwed
up on Lenovo M58p
Files Pictures select jpg set as wallpaper a couple times get
correct wallpaper display.
Reboot, all screwed up again.

Likely hundreds of updates in December.
This install is a couple days old, still has the problem.
What packages are involved in Set Wallpaper?
Any way to put Set Wallpaper back to early December? All my vivid iso's are
now in February.

Testing vervid I do updates most days and installs every couple weeks.
Typically there are a whole pile of packages (!) so us users don't install
package by package so we can't tell which caused the trouble.
