I am very new to the Linux community and have recently installed Kubuntu
in a partition. I have the problem described in this thread - the CD/DVD
ROM drive spins up and is very noisy, for no apparent reason, whether or
not there is a disc in the drive and whatever program I have open or
close. I can see no immediate reason for this.

I am not technical with Linux but willing and able to learn, so perhaps
someone could talk me through the steps I have to take to report and
resolve this issue?

At the moment I simply can't use the Linux installation because of the
noise. Windows XP is fine but I would prefer not to use that.
