One question: jglen490 talks about changing some /etc/rc6.d script... which
actually is just a directory... What's exactly the name of the second (where I
should change do_stop) script??

Same problem here, but I've noticed that restart works for me, but also
during beta testing of Intrepid there was a time where shut down
worked for me, but not recently so I tried a fresh install but without
any success.

I think in this bug report there are some different causes that generate
similar problems. But I'm sure about one of those.
Starting my Ubuntu 8.04 with a usb mouse connected makes it work perfectly. If
I start it without a usb mouse, so that I use only the touchpad, after a couple
of seconds
