I managed to discover that the bug was caused by the pam-usb package
which was installed on both my machines (at work and at home). After
removing this package everything went back to normal.

It's still broken, after rebooting my machine it takes me back to the
login screen. At home if I leave my computer working for more than one
day it fixes itself until next reboot. Over 10 days and still no one to
fix this ?? It was working ok in the previous release!

After the latest kernel update attaching and detaching usb devices
doesn't take me back to the login screen. I will test everything and let
you know

UPDATE: At home on my other computer, ubuntu 10.04LTS after yesterday's
upgrade it does the same thing! I also noticed that it happens after
entering the password to the gnome-keyring manager

it was set to use system settings proxy server, I changed it to no proxy and
the problem disappeared.
Thank you very much for the clue.
By the way - when I open the ubuntu one folder there is a little button
"connect" and when I press it it stays on "connecting" all the time.
