I have the same problem.
It seems, that the problem came with kernel 4.12.
Nvidia-304 has worked without problems for me in artful with kernels up till
4.11.

I know this probably sounds dumb... but have you checked the playback
levels using ALSA mixer? Try maxing the audio levels as well as
muting/unmute. Sometimes the devices initialize with mute on. Even if
alsamixer says the channels are unmuted try muting and unmuting.

May I suggest you turn on S.M.A.R.T in your BIOS. This feature will
watch you hard-drive to see if it is starting to fail. When the fault
happens again, I would check to see if the S.M.A.R.T. feature is
reporting problems with the device. I am not suggesting this is an HD
