I've found:
Without fglrx installed - Suspend, hibernate and Resume work fine
With fglrx installed - Suspend, hibernate and Resume work fine
With fglrx installed and compiz active - No resume from suspend or hibernate
With fglrx

Got it, I had the BackingStore option enabled in my xorg.conf. Turning
it off (actually deleting the whole file and letting nvidia-settings
have its way) immediately fixes the problem.
