Deleting the /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache file brought gtk back to life. I use a theme called 'wild-shine' but tried with many other themes. The gnome icon-theme seems to be used by all of those. As to what caused that cache file to become corrupt is a question I have no answer to.
