Problem was caused by undetected HD errors. ran several disk scans to
get rid of bad sectors and reinstalled from update.

I hae insalled 9.10 on several other computer from the same immage on DVD
and usb stick. I appears there was som incompatiity between the 9.04 and
9.10 on this machine that prevented 9.10 from installing.

just tried to run package manager.
