The Bug: The machine may work fine for as much as an hour. The first
symptom I notice is that the KDE clock stops ticking when I have the
mouse and keyboard idle. The clock will resume ticking only if a key is
held down

To run motion as a daemon you need set:
daemon yes
and!!!
process_id_file /var/run/motion/motion.pid(I think someone should change
default config in pack)
/etc/init.d/motion script trying to run motion

Now I've got libpam-smbpass switched off so I can log into my account.

Like all TFTP daemons in ubuntu tftpd-hpa does not support ipv6
(see: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/sounder/2006-July/008297.html)
Change the entry in inetd.conf to udp4

if you are running a ipv6 system you should use
udp4
since tftpd is only supporting ipv4
