I have the same issue. Is exactly the same as described by rcorlett. I have Ubuntu 10.04 only, no dual boot, installed in a Lenovo T400 (6474-D51). My appearance Visual Effects are set on Normal. It started as soon I installed it and no fixes that I downloaded has solved the problem.
