now after re-installing the binary nvidia driver.

Update manager failing to update packages properly causing crashes
I had a similar problem. I ran the update and after the reboot the X
server would not start. /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows what is below. I
have an Nvidia 8800gts 640mb with Nvidia binary drivers. After
reinstalling the Nvidia driver, everything works now.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the
