Same issue here.
Xubuntu 14.04 (32 bit) clean install. 2 HDD, 2 partitions : / and
swap.
After grub the message: error: malformed file, press any key to
continue
Pressing a key allows booting to continue.
Sometimes it displays and I need to hit a key, sometimes not and it boot
straight.
