Having the same problem with Lucid Beta 1 using nvidia v96 driver.
The only way I can start x and boot to gnome desktop is to bypass gdm
altogether.
Clearly it has sometjhing to do with the way gdm interacts with said
nvidia graphics.
I have been testing Lucid since Alpha 3 and this only started

I can confirm this behaviour when programs are started from the main
menu applet.
It does not happen when using the alternative menu bar applet.
Started happening after installing the latest round of updates which
included gnome-panel updates.

gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_in
As a further footnote, I just installed a new theme (ambience clean from
gnome-look.org) and the icons appear as they should.
So this bug is obviously theme-related.

I have precisely the same problem here; older box, AMD Duron 512Mb RAM.
The strange thing is, it works fine on my main box which has a P4
processor with 1.5 Gb RAM. Once it does finally startup (which can take
about 40 secs and with the same 100% processor usage), it subsequently
works fine.

Identical problem here...using Gutsy final 7.10..log-in sound (drum-

prefs and the sound playing there when play button pressed...this is an
annoying bug and leaves an unpolished feel which will be noticed by new
users
