When I installed linux32 on my 64bit machine, the package manager
removed the essential package util-linux (with a big warning!).

Yes, I found it by searching a bit better. =)
I deleted the linux32 package and reinstalled the util-linux package. (I
installed the linux32 package because I wanted to run flash on my 64bit Ubuntu
and I'm happy that the flash extension still works)
