I too just encountered this.
I unpacked both .deb files, and observed the following:
* The set of image files in both packages is identical
* Only ubuntu-backgrounds-karmic contains a background sequence XML
file: /usr/share/backgrounds/contest/karmic.xml

qemu build 0330 does not support -fsdev. I was not able to start kvm
with 9p at all.
If you will make another build I will try it too.
